College is a place where rules don’t apply and parents have no say. It is a place where an individual can finally be themselves and become a “real” adult. However, there a few preconceived notions about college that just don’t fly in the real world.
Wearing Pajamas to class
When you emerge from high school and realize you’ll never have to wear a collard shirt or itchy plaid skirt ever again, you get a tad bit excited. Getting to finally pick out your wardrobe every day is no small reward, so it’s time to rebel right? Wear whatever you want! Wear whatever is the most comfortable – pajamas right? Wrong. Everyone has that Monday where they forget that a hairbrush and pants exist, but going to class in your cookie monster pajamas every day is definitely not cute. Put a little effort into your look. I mean for goodness sake the whole world has to look at you!
Getting wasted every weekend
Some of us got a taste of the “turn up” phenomenon in high school and others, not so much. For those of us who never experienced the wonders of drinking and partying uncontrollably, that’s kind of all you think about! You want to party as much as you can, every weekend for that matter! And you probably will your entire first semester of freshman year until you realize waking up in a stranger’s bed gets old and hangovers are simply un- curable (God’s gift to us).
Eating whatever you want, whenever you want
You’re on your own now and you don’t have to ask mom’s permission to order Chinese all week, you can just do it! But trust me when I tell you that freshman fifteen is no joke and cold pizza for breakfast does not work wonders for your look, sweetie.
Freedom from your parents
It’s great being on your own and not having your parents constantly watching over you. This new found Independence is one of the most liberating feelings in the world! You don’t need your parents anymore… or do you? You’re always going to need your parents for something, whether it be some cash to get you out of a tight squeeze or to talk to you out of one of the many mental breakdowns college provokes. You’ll miss your parents more when you’re far away, plus now you have to wash your own clothes… bummer.
Becoming part of a clique
In high school you think you have some idea of what college will be like. MTV is a valid teacher right? You think there are going to be all these cliques and groups and you have to find one or you’re bound to be deemed a reject for the remainder of your collegiate career! Heads up, this isn’t Pitch Perfect or Accepted. Anna Kendrick isn’t going to recruit you into some sorority like acapella group to fit in and Jonah Hill isn’t going to be running around in a hot dog suit screaming, “Ask me about my wiener!” In real life you just make friends, from all different walks of life. To limit yourself to one group of friends just to fit in is silly. People are just people and cliques are so high school.
Moral of the story: If you want to know what college is really about, go and find out for yourself!
Food for thought.
