Marvel fans were treated to some very exciting news last week, which was the announcement of the green-lighting of Deadpool’s very own film. The movie, which will very likely star Ryan Reynolds as the “merchant with a mouth,” is set to be released in 2016. Reynolds, who is himself a fan of Deadpool, has often expressed much enthusiasm for playing the part.
Certainly the road leading up to this announcement has been rocky at best, with support for the film never truly having been completely there from Fox. Without a doubt, one of the decisive factors in making the decision to green-light this film was the test footage that was leaked online this last summer, starring Reynolds. The footage managed to stir up fans once more, and was perhaps what Fox needed to see that this is a movie that fans really want.
One of the biggest concerns from fans has been that of the film’s rating. While many argue that a Deadpool movie with anything other than an R-rating would be inadequate, due to the hero’s sometimes rather explicit humor and nature. The reason that this is such an issue is simple. Deadpool is known far more for his cocky, smart-ass attitude than for his crime-fighting. Fans enjoy Deadpool’s feuds with Wolverine and momma-joke battles with Spiderman just as much as the guns and explosions, and it would truly be tragic to have it all simmered down for a PG-13 rating.
Though I can do very little to calm these fears, as a die-hard Deadpool fan I can only state that I can rest well believing the film will do the hero justice. I am certain that to the many fans out there, Deadpool is much bigger and overall greater than an R-rating, and the writers will definitely make it work. It’s time to stop being skeptical and start getting excited for the awesomeness that will be the Deadpool movie.
