Some things just don’t mix, and it might be time to list John Travolta and the podium at the Oscars as one of them. If you thought he couldn’t dig himself any deeper into the pit of celebrity awkwardness, then you probably weren’t watching last Sunday. As a nervous attempt to redeem himself after his astounding interpretation of Idina Menzel’s name at last year’s Oscars (Adell Dazeem, anyone?), the two were brought on together to list nominees. But before the names were announced, Travolta had to do something weird; it’s just one of those creepy celebrity obligations.
He used a whole year to learn how to pronounce her name (which proved to be a year well spent), but he demonstrated this new ability while also shutting out the audience to have a one-sided staring and face-touching contest with the singer. He caressed her chin and whispered to her at kissing distance, “You, you my darling, my wickedly talented Idina Menzel…”
His voiced cracked and swayed as she turned to the audience to avoid having her soul sucked out of her eyes. Fortunately, Travolta came back to Earth to go on with the proceedings before the producers considered playing the music designated for winners whose speeches run long.
For a guy so smooth on the silver screen, there is something about this one singer that makes him the strangest man in Hollywood for a day. And though we have to wait another year to see this interaction gain a new chapter, it can be said with some certainty that Travolta’s obligation to weirdness will never go unfulfilled.
