Oakland native Kehlani brought her YSBH (You Should Be Here) tour to The Observatory OC and the only word to describe it is simply- amazing!
The YSBH tour made it’s stop in Santa Ana, California and Kehlani gave fans a stupendous show full of energy and surprises.
The night began with opening artists Pell, Marc E Bassy, and Ambre Perkins. Kehlani fans flooded The Observatory venue anxiously awaiting the R&B songstress. At about half past nine the lights dimmed and Kehlani stepped on stage with her back turned to the crowd and her voice rang through the speakers- “Santa Ana, let me hear you make some noise!”– the crowd screamed and the room that was merely lighted by cell phones suddenly turned blue with bright stage lights.
Kehlani began the show with the track titling her tour “You Should Be Here”. From up in the balcony all that was seen looking down was a sea of hands up in the air trying to capture the moment. As the show progressed I became astonished at how insane this was, in all positive connotation of the word.
The real show began as soon as Kehlani stripped off the black leather jacket she wore upon entering the stage. She began hitting choreography as she sang to “How That Taste” and about halfway through the song two back-up dancers joined her. The crowd sang along and reciprocated the energy she gave off.
It was incredible how there was not one song the crowd did not sing along to. Kehlani fans, or should I say the Tsunami Mob, go hard!
Midway through the show Kehlani thanked her fans and gave a special shout out to rapper G-Eazy for showing her the ropes of being on tour. Seconds after, G-Eazy steps out onto the stage and the crowd begins to scream. Together, they proceeded to perform “Get Away” (Remix). If that were not a great surprise on its own she later announced for Wale to step out. He performed “Bad” and the entire room went crazy.
The MMG rapper boasted about Kehlani on the mic for a minute and said something along the lines of “I don’t think you guys realize you’re looking at a superstar”! KYLE also made his way out to support Kehlani and perform the fun track “Just a Picture”.
Kehlani played just about every track her voice has touched, from features, to her first mixtape release Cloud 19. Kehlani’s “Niggas” performance was probably the most seductive and energetic moment of the night following the crowd favorite “The Way”. Her and her dancers danced on chairs making a really empowering yet sexy routine out of both tracks.
She closed out the show with the beautiful melodies “The Letter” and “Bright”. This 20 year old young lady had some really powerful words to say before leaving the stage. Kehlani reminded everyone that self-love and faith is very crucial. She also prompted all in attendance to exercise kindness because one never knows how much of a difference we can be making in another person by simply giving a genuine compliment or something as simple as a smile. The room filled with nothing but good energy at that moment and I realized there is a special light in this girl that is going to take her very far.
There is no doubt Kehlani will be a prominent name when it comes to modern R&B. I coincide with Wale when he stated “this girl has the formula down”, indeed she does. She knows her music, it is evident that she’s inspired by 90s R&B, by the way she incorporates the dance moves into her set and simply embodying the era in her lyrical content and delivery. She seems to be very level headed and genuine, with a lot to share with her listeners, and I can see that is the lead factor as to why people gravitate towards her music and movement.
Kehlani was so impressed and humbled with the love Santa Ana showed her that she vowed to be back soon. Now, a lot of artists may say that to make the city they are performing in feel special, but let me tell you that she really meant that. There are very few shows that generate such great impression both from the artist and fans, you would have had to be there to understand what I’m talking about. Did I mention the show sold out online within minutes of being available? Kehlani is really something special.
