If you’ve never heard of it before, Kickstarter.com is a website where you can make a page, pitch an idea or project that you need funding for, and “backers” all over the internet can pledge money towards your cause. Most investments come with an incentive. Even major renovation projects and commercial investors are beginning to seek out financial assistance from the anonymous generosity of Internet strangers. The Hard Rock Hotel in Palm Springs, California is the first hotel in the world to seek financial backing for a renovation solely through crowdfunding. In return, investors receive incentives like free room upgrades, discounted room rates, and food and beverage coupons.
So what does Potato Salad have to do with Kickstarter? I think everyone is having a hard time figuring that out. But the media picked up on a project started by Zack Danger Brown, who got hungry and just wanted to make some potato salad. Kickstarter backers naturally followed suit. I don’t believe he expected much to come from the crowdfunded endeavor, but as of 5:30 PM on July 10th, over 5,500 people have backed the project for a total of $45,161 pledged toward the making of the spud-based concoction, with almost 100 people pledging $100 or more. Brown states in his pitch simply, “I’m making potato salad. I haven’t decided what kind yet.”
How much potato salad can $45,000 make? And how will Zack Danger Brown now deliver on his promise of making 5,500 people potato salad? Well, the project was put up on July 3rd, and can be backed all the way until August 2nd. So if you want some potato salad and don’t want to make it, Brown will make it for you! Also, depending on how much you invest, you can receive a potato with your name engraved in it, choose a ‘potato-salad-appropriate’ ingredient, and even receive a potato salad-themed hat, shirt, haiku poem written by the chef himself.
If you don’t believe that there is such thing as a $45,000 potato salad out there, or you actually want to back the tuber-titillated fanatic, you can view the Kickstarter page here.
