When you’re bored at work and it’s the graveyard shift, you do what you have to do to make the timepass by. However, tonight I decided to do something I’ve never really done before, go on Kickstarter.
What is Kickstarter?
Kickstarter is a website that launched in 2009 and is designed to help projects get funded. These projects are submitted by people like us and vary from music artists trying to get their next album released, film makers getting their next movie going, and the creative and awesome products trying to get made.
How does it Work?
It’s simple really. A Kickstarter campaign establishes a monetary goal, a deadline, and different donation amounts that usually have awesome perks or rewards depending on how much you’re willing to donate.
One of the most notable Kickstarter campaigns that took place was for the Veronica Mars Movie Project. It had over 91,000 backers and generated over $5,000,000 in funds to help make the movie. You can also take a look at the cool perks different donaters received. And just for kicks(pun intended), here is a video Kristen Bell made during the last 24 hours of the campaign.
How can Kickstarter help me?
Well, there are a few ways to benefit off Kickstarter.
1. Make your own campaign. Anyone is allowed to make a campaign, you just have to sign up, create a project you think people will give you money for, find some perks for them to receive in return, and make your dreams come true. I’ve also seen some random ass campaigns like “help me get a suit for my job interview” and “I need to make a birthday cake for my girlfriend” and these campaigns actually got funded!
2. Find cool stuff. I was only on Kickstarter for ten minutes and I found a whole bunch of cool stuff. I will share links now…
The Coolest – This is the most amazing cooler ever! Check it out!
Colfax Smart Pack – This is a backpack that can charge your mobile devices and looks really cool!
Go-Comb – It’s a cool looking comb that fits in your wallet like a credit card.
Plus, a lot of these campaigns let you donate and actually receive the product when it’s finished.(Often for less than they plan to sell it)
3. Help dreams come true. The great thing about Kickstarter is that many of the people looking for funding are trying to make their dreams come true. Some of these people have worked on these projects for years. Some of them have nowhere else to go and Kickstarter is their last resort to “make it happen”. Yes, it’s awesome to donate money and get cool stuff in return but it doesn’t always have to be about that! The minimum donation accepted is $1 and for some of these campaigns, every dollar counts.
Kickstarter is truly one of a kind and if you haven’t had the chance to check it out, please do!
