Have you ever found yourself struggling to get through the week because you don’t have a genuine passion for your work? Do you find yourself stuck in a daily routine with a lack of challenge? Have you ever wondered if there is more out there in this world for you?
Well, I have a great news: Your life has meaning, and a purpose. All you have to do is find it, and allow this greatness to manifest within you.
Maybe you lack the motivation to accomplish more, or you don’t think you’re qualified enough. That’s why people like Les Brown – motivational speaker, author, radio DJ, and former host – exist on this earth.
In order for Brown to become the person he was created to be, he had to break boundaries and limitations that were placed on him as a child to find his purpose. The video below is a speech, “Meaning of Life,” that he gave at NAC13 2014, made into one of many “Les Brown” Youtube videos, which will help give you a better understanding of this search for purpose.
From mentally disabled to Emmy-winner.
Sometimes we discover influential people like Brown as they shine in their light, but assume that they’ve always been great. We fail to realize what it took for leaders to get to their state of glory. If anyone is to give you a motivational talk, Les Brown is the guy.
Brown was raised in a low-income section of Miami, Florida, in an abandoned building, until he was eventually given up for adoption. At a young age, he was declared “educable mentally retarded.” Despite these labels and the self-esteem issues that resulted, he received encouragement from the right people, which helped him to reach his full potential – a key point in his speeches today.
Imagine if he listened to the people who didn’t believe in him.
Find your passion of work.
Brown teaches people to follow their dreams just as he learned to do. Here are some key questions in the video to reflect on so you can you start making changes today (or continuing on your path to greatness):
What if you live your whole life only to discover it was wrong?
Most people go to their grave with greatness still in them because they’re complacent and personally choose to stay where they’re at. 85% of Americans are stuck with a job they hate. Either they lack confidence, or the motivation to live their life with purpose.
If you want to find your meaning in life, keep searching for what it is that makes you happy. Build off that passion, and spread this love with others. Help others achieve happiness and watch what you attract in your life. Challenge yourself – there’s a difference between living and struggle versus surviving.
What are the things that we CAN do that would enable to use our powers?
Too many of us go through life unaware of the capabilities, gifts, or talents that resonate within us. Don’t limit yourself, and certainly don’t allow others to put limitations on you. Take some time to figure out what it is you’re good at. If you’re not sure, push yourself to find out what your purpose is.
What is it that gives your life a sense of meaning and purpose?
Like Brown says, a big part of this is knowing your life work. Find out what your passion is. Do you like to make people feel good? A doctor does this by saving lives, a hairdresser does this by transforming client’s looks, a DJ does this through music, a teacher can do this through inspiring students to do better.
If you know what your life work is, start working on it now. Once you discover the meaning of your life, it “puts you in your power place.”
What’s the danger in settling, or “playing it safe?”
The 85% of Americans who go to jobs that don’t stimulate them, will experience a lowered sense of self. “A dead-end position will erode your self-esteem, creates inner turmoil….and emptiness.” Your life is worth finding out what it is you’re supposed to do.
Don’t let your dreams haunt you. When you look back on life, you’ll regret the things you didn’t do more than the things you did. Work on something you enjoy and that’s worthy of your time and talent.
Ask yourself: If today was your last day, would you being doing exactly what you wanted to do in life?
