When reading Vince’s biography, before even hearing his music, I became a fan. There is nothing I commend more than a person who blends one passion (in Vince’s case, it is music) with another passion (and again, in his case, it is speaking candidly about mental illness). It is refreshing to see a person take what they love and combine it with showing their love for humanity. I am so grateful for people like Vincent—people who speak honestly about issues many are not fully aware of as they should be, and being the person bold enough to address it head on.
So I fell in love with Vince Grant. And then I listened to his music. And now I’m ready to marry the guy (sorry, too creepy?). It could have something to do with the fact that I am a huge fan of the soulful, indie sound he creates that is reminiscent of other musical giants from yesteryear.
Anyone who has experienced depression knows what a dark, mysterious, unfair thing it is. It beats you when you are already down and leaves you in a perpetual state of disinterest in positively everything. It shackles and suffocates you. These are just some very basic ways of describing it. As a fellow artist who has dealt with depression, I feel poignantly the things Vince is conveying in his music. Which I believe is the guy’s goal: speak to others who have mental illness as well as speak to the general public to help them better understand it. I applaud his ability to use his pain as a catalyst to not only create art, but speak to others who have endured similar situations.
Vince has already done an impressive amount of work—performing at SXSW, gigging in clubs in NYC and LA, and now just releasing a 5 song EP back in February. This Chicago born artist has dubbed the title of his debut CD “My Depression Is Always Trying To Kill Me” and has also produced two music videos giving the public a gritty, but important look at depression.
