This is a video EVERYONE needs to see.
Look Up is a spoken word for our “online” generation. Written, performed and directed by Gary Turk, this crucial life lesson is taught to us through a love story. A man would have never discovered the woman of his dreams had he not been looking up.
“This media we call social is anything but, when we open our computers and it’s our doors we shut”….This is one of the most powerful messages that our youth needs to hear. Children are growing up in a world where they spend their time on gadgets and devices instead of playing outside. Birthday greetings are no longer in person, but through text messages. Families are having dinner together, with nobody looking up. It’s heartbreaking.
Technology is great, but it should not replace real life. We fail to teach our youth that social media should not replace direct human relations. We continue to find ways to make it easier to stay connected through social media, yet end up spending more time alone.
We have become a generation obsessed with self image and engulfed in the life of hype. We’re so addicted to our notification and newsfeed, that we forget to live in the moment. We can give our loved ones our “likes” on social media, but can’t give them our honest attention in person. We spend so much time looking down, we don’t know what’s going on around us and the chances we miss. We fail to see the beauty in our surroundings.
So what can you do now that you’ve watched this video?
Stay connected with family and friends through social media, but learn to balance technology. Put your phone away during meals. Give your loved ones your full attention when spending time together. Spontaneously put your phone on “airplane mode” to enjoy the day. Next time you’re at a concert or big event, embrace the moment and post pictures later. Spending time off your phone won’t kill you.
I admit, I am guilty myself. As soon as I’m done writing this, I’m going to spend the rest of the day enjoying it the real way.
