In a stunning display of pocket change Microsoft has announced its purchase of the “Mincecraft” studio Mojang as of September 15th. The purchase comes in at approximately $2.5 billion dollars but Microsoft reports that it expects to break even by summer of next year. Coinciding with the purchase three of the founders of Mojang have stepped down, including Markus ‘Notch’ Persson who has become one of the most iconic game developers in recent times and this is partly why he agreed to the sale of the company. Notch has gone on to reveal just how tired he had become of being in the spotlight, Minecraft had far surpassed his expected levels of popularity, and his decision to allow Microsoft to purchase Mojang will allow Notch to take a step back and return to creating games; if they’re anything like his most recent creation then Notch disappearing back into the lab will be well worth the wait.
