All I have to say is that The Purge: Anarchy is a surprisingly good movie. I honestly did not expect too much from a sequel of the movie since I believe most sequels don’t really surpass the first, but this movie exponentially surpassed it.
Personally, I did not watch The Purge because it was a horror/suspense movie but mainly because of the concept of the US government having an annual “purge” (cleanse of soul by allowing all laws to be broken, even murder). Most people who only see the surface of the movie said it sucked but when they saw the sequel, The Purge: Anarchy, they believed it to be way better and I knew I had to go see it.
Unlike the first movie, the story line had more meaning and more backstories of the protagonists. These backstories also have that buildup effect so the audience didn’t really have the answer right in the beginning of the movie, like other movies. If you’ve seen the first movie, you’ve probably thought “that kid could have probably prevented everything if he didn’t open the gate” and thought he was stupid. This sequel deals more with fast action and really trying to create a movement in society that goes against people in power, aside from personal objectives from the protagonist. I found that really great to the storyline, and I don’t want to go into any more detail about that.
Many scenes in the movie are really great too. Everyone loves the underdogs reaching to the top and this movie undoubtedly is exactly that. Also, this movie really delves into keeping you on the edge of your seat, meaning you don’t know what will happen next or which enemies will come out or what the protagonists will do or who to really trust. You can also expect a lot of unexpected scenes. The characters and masks in this movie are also creative, like the first movie, but there are a lot more characters (extras also) so you can understand that the director really thought about it and catered each characters to the audience’s eyes.
Overall, I would give the movie an 9/10. This movie really made the rich people and the government really untrustworthy and ruthless, during the movie, of course. And personally I think this is a great movie because it allows people to think what would happen if the government really were to pull something like this. This movie invoked a lot of political views in the American society if you saw this beneath the surface of the movie.
Go watch it!
