Variety has reported that director Neill Blomkamp (District 9) has been officially hired by 20th Century Fox to direct the next installment of the Alien franchise. In what may be be the first case of anyone Instagramming their way into the director’s chair, the anticipation for the project first took root in early January when Blomkamp released several art pieces for his take on the Alien universe. While the director stated that the artwork was simply a passion project and had no actual ties to the studio it appears someone high up in Fox was watching as Blomkamp has now gotten his wish. Blomkamp currently has his hands full getting ready for the release of his third film Chappie (March 6th) which just so happens to star Sigourney Weaver who has played Ellen Ripley, heroine of the main Alien films; Weaver has expressed her interest in returning to the iconic role were Blomkamp be able to direct his vision for the universe. As of this time Weaver has not been confirmed for the film.
Not much is known in general other than it’s happening, but things are looking quite optimistic as the once-lauded series has fallen on hard times with lesser sequels and spin-offs leading to diminishing returns for the franchise. The earliest release date is looking to be sometime around 2017 so there will definitely be room for this project to evolve, but in the meantime it’s okay to get your hopes up a little that this will be something special.
