When saying something controversial, people often use a disclaimer to make their statement less harsh. This never works. When someone starts a sentence with “No offense, but…” I know the following statement is clearly going to be something offensive. Here are some other useless disclaimers that are often used.
“I’m not racist, but… (Insert offensive stereotype)”
This is usually followed by a glance around the room to see if anyone belonging to the aforementioned race is within earshot. No need to mask your discriminating remarks with an insincere assertion of innocence.
“I said wouldn’t tell anyone… (Insert secret)”
That’s a foolproof way to guarantee that I’m never going to trust you again.
“I’m not making excuses, but… (Insert excuse)”
The next sentence is 100% guaranteed to be an excuse.
“With all due respect… (Insert disrespectful statement)”
I have no respect for you and I’m about to say something that confirms this lack of respect.
Next time you want to say something racist, disrespectful, or outright rude, just say it. Eliminate these useless disclaimers and stand behind your offensive statements.
