The White House Correspondents dinner, or “nerd prom” as some call it, always presents an opportunity for the President to change pace from his usual political speeches, and give a comedic monologue.
This year President Obama did not disappoint with his comedy. While there were a few jokes that seemed forced, like a photoshopped picture of the President sitting next to the devil signing a bill with Senator Ted Cruz in a frozen over hell, most of his jokes were witty and up-to-date with current pop culture phenomenons. For instance, a quip about Speaker Boehner’s..err…affliction to tanning with a reference to the Netflix hit, Orange is the New Black.
However, the most refreshing aspect of Obama’s monologue, is his consistency in poking fun at himself, an ability most would assume a person in such a powerful position would not have an easy time doing. He starts out his speech by sarcastically saying his year was “stellar”, then quickly dives into the problems with the Affordable Care Act start-up (if you don’t remember, the registration website was…a little slow), and continues to bring up his perceived downfalls the mass media often gives him a hard time for.
All and all, the nearly twenty-minute monologue was fresh, funny, and gives us a little reminder that the President of the United States, on top of all his diplomatic and leadership strengths, can be funny too.
