Superfood Pizza Crust

Those who have made the switch to gluten free boast about how great they now feel. They have an increase in energy, a better immune system and an even better digestive system. The one thing you don’t hear them boast about is that amazing gluten free pizza they ate. They say that nothing compares to the “real thing”. That’s the honest truth. Gluten free pizza crusts tend to be soggy and not as crisp as regular crust. Although the pizza crust I’m sharing with you today doesn’t taste like the “real thing”, I assure you that you will feel good about what you are eating. It has a heartier taste than normal pizza crust and the edges do crisp up nicely.

This superfood pizza crust is made from quinoa flour and ground flax seeds, both of which contain great health benefits. Quinoa is a nutrient rich grain and provides a complete protein. Ground flax seed is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and also contains fiber like compounds called lignans. Flax is great for regulating digestion. Both quinoa and flax have been shown to help promote a healthy inflammation response and also contain antioxidant properties. Your body will thank you for this healthy pizza alternative.

This crust recipe can be used for any type of pizza. Be creative with various sauces and toppings.

Superfood Pizza Crust


¼ cup ground flax seed
¼ cup quinoa flour
¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
1 egg

1 teaspoon olive oil (for greasing pan)

dash of each (optional):
dried oregano
Italian seasoning
red chili flakes

To Make:

Preheat oven to 350°
In a medium size bowl add ground flax, quinoa flour, parmesan cheese, and herbs and spices.  Stir until flour blend is uniform. Add the egg and stir with a fork to combine. You will need to use your hands to mix the dough. Form into a ball and let sit for 5-10 minutes.To form crust, place dough ball in between two sheets of wax paper and roll out dough using a rolling pin or in my case a wine bottle. Both work well. Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness. Place on a foil-lined baking sheet that has been greased with olive oil. Bake for 12 minutes. Remove from oven and top pizza with your choice of toppings. I use store-bought pesto, mozzarella cheese, cherry tomatoes, fresh garlic, black olives, shaved asparagus and feta cheese. Once you have constructed your pizza put back into the oven for 5-7 minutes.
