Opportunities come and go throughout life, some better than others, and some more often than others. However, aside from these opportunities coming about during your life, how do you further your career, better your life, and come closer to your definition of success? The simple answer is to do something about it. But, what exactly does that mean?
Initiative is important no matter what you are doing in life. This is one thing that is universal among career paths, and anywhere you may go in life. Without initiative, you will likely take much longer to achieve what you hope to have, if you achieve it at all. Over the past several years, I have had to deal with my fair share of difficult times, one of which is the current job market. If there is one thing I can stress about the job search, it is that initiative plays one of the largest parts of getting that job you desire. In addition to initiative being a major factor in getting a job, it also plays a crucial role in your ability to move up in the workplace.
There are three types of people in the world, those who accomplish things, those who watch the accomplishments, and those who are oblivious to the whole thing. Someone who is oblivious to what is going on will most likely never move up or achieve what they dream of because they lack the drive and desire needed to do so. On the other hand, those who spectate and watch someone accomplish things may be there for the ride, but they will not actually achieve anything on their own either. The only person that ends up with what they want in life is the person with initiative, the person who has the drive and desire to succeed.
With that being said, think about where you fall in those three categories. If you are not the person accomplishing things, take a step back and look at what you have done, and think about what you want to do. Then, lay out some steps that you think will get you to where you want to be in life, and take the initiative to climb that life staircase and get where you want to be. There is no better feeling than being successful and accomplishing your goals without someone else helping you. This is not to say that you shouldn’t accept help, just that you should be determined to succeed, and if you can use initiative to your advantage to achieve success, you should. If you wait for help from people, you will fall back to the category of “watching” and be right back where you started. Use initiative to your advantage, use it to further your career, and use it to help you succeed in life. With it, you can achieve what you want.
