Juice Cleanse 101

With summer quickly approaching, and day club parties opening up, you might see more people hopping on that “juicing life.”

You might be wondering what the hype is about.

Juicing, which typically requires a machine ranging from $40 to $400, breaks down fruits and vegetables, separates them from the pulp and turns them into a simplified juice that does magic to our bodies.

With many healing properties and health benefits, there are several reasons why you should juice too:

1.  Juicing gives you the nutrients that can prevent diseases.

Juicing is an awesome way to add nutrients from fruits and vegetables that you probably wouldn’t eat. I mean, when’s the last time you ate kale, or scarfed down a beet?

Fruit and vegetable juices retain most of the vitamins, minerals and plant chemicals (phytonutrients) that would be found in these food items if they were whole. These nutrients can help protect against cardiovascular disease, cancer and various inflammatory diseases.

Careful though… don’t assume that eating the whole versions of fruits and vegetables isn’t as healthy. When juicing machines extract juice, the pulp is left behind, which contains the healthy fiber important for our bodies’ digestive function.

Juicing doesn’t always cover everything our bodies need, so make sure to add fiber (and protein) to your diet too!

2. Juicing is the perfect “detox” if you’re feeling guilty.

Sometimes a weekend of savory junk food and too many drinks turns into cheat days, and we wake up Monday feeling ashamed. Juicing is the perfect way to reset and get you back on track!

Juicing can be used as a way to add to your normal diet routine, or you can do a “juice cleanse.” The nutrients from juicing are so powerful, they literally clean out your body’s system and remove toxins.

3. You will lose weight.

Juicing is a very effective, healthy and natural way to shed those pounds. The amount of weight you lose will depend on the type of recipes you use and how often you juice. There are several websites and blogs that offer help with this topic.

Juice cleanses for weight loss range anywhere from 3 days to 60 days. When Joe Cross, from the documentary “Fat Sick & Nearly Dead,” juice fasted for 60 days, he lost over 100 pounds, cured a chronic illness, and discontinued all his medications!

The most popular recipe for weight loss, which helped me lose weight, is the “Mean Green Machine.” Hint: the more green in your cup, the more potent the juice and likely that you will lose weight. Avoid too much fruit, because that will hike up the drink’s calories.

4. Promote healthy skin and more.

The fact that vitamins can do wonders for our bodies’ skin, hair and nails is no secret.  Juicing not only improves skin tone, but also gives it a “glow.” An increase in our vitamin consumption from juicing can also help with things like: hair growth, acne, headaches and insomnia.

Try replacing one meal a day with a serving of juice, and see the difference! There are lots of recipes out there catered toward different health benefits (ie. liver cleanse, arthritis prevention, antioxidants, cold/flu cure).

Make sure you use glass mason jars to seal the freshness, and try to consume the juice within 48 hours.
